A deliberate break with the show's own format: after 23 years without one, the ceremony had a host (Kristen Bell) for the first time, and every one of the 13 acting awards — plus the two stunt categories — were presented by women. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri led with three wins. Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) and Frances McDormand took lead honors, with Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney in supporting. This Is Us and Veep won the TV ensembles. Morgan Freeman received the Life Achievement Award.

HISTORICAL NOTES

• Kristen Bell becoming the first host in the ceremony's history, opening a show built entirely around women presenters.
